How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Actually Take? (2026 Timeline)

April 21, 2026 8 min read Category: Timelines

The number one question we hear from homeowners in Vancouver WA and Portland OR: how long is my bathroom going to be out of commission? The honest answer depends on the scope of the project, but we can give you a realistic range based on hundreds of completed bathroom remodels across the metro area.

This guide breaks down actual timelines by project type, walks through a week-by-week schedule for a standard remodel, and covers the most common causes of delays — plus how to avoid them.

Typical Bathroom Remodel Timelines

Half-Bath Refresh: 1-2 Weeks

A half-bath (powder room) with no shower or tub is the fastest remodel. You're typically looking at a new vanity, toilet, flooring, paint, and maybe a new light fixture. No waterproofing, no tile surround, minimal plumbing changes.

  • Demo and prep: 1-2 days
  • Plumbing and electrical: 1-2 days
  • Flooring, vanity, paint: 3-5 days
  • Fixtures and final touch-up: 1 day

If you keep the same layout and don't move plumbing, a half-bath can be done in as little as 5 working days.

Standard Full Bathroom: 3-5 Weeks

This is the most common scope we see. A full gut-and-rebuild of a standard bathroom with tub or shower, vanity, toilet, tile work, and new fixtures. This is the timeline most homeowners should plan for.

  • Demo: 1-2 days
  • Rough-in plumbing and electrical: 2-3 days
  • Inspection (Clark County or City of Portland): 1-3 days wait
  • Waterproofing and backer board: 2-3 days
  • Tile work: 5-7 days
  • Vanity, toilet, fixtures: 2-3 days
  • Paint, trim, final walkthrough: 2-3 days

Reality check: The 3-5 week range accounts for inspection wait times and cure times for waterproofing and grout. Rushing these steps leads to failures. A quality remodel respects the process.

Master Bathroom Renovation: 6-10 Weeks

A master bath typically involves more square footage, a walk-in shower, double vanity, possibly a soaking tub, heated floors, and more complex tile layouts. Layout changes that require moving plumbing add time.

  • Demo and structural work: 3-5 days
  • Plumbing rough-in (often relocated): 3-5 days
  • Electrical, heated floor prep: 2-3 days
  • Inspections: 2-5 days wait
  • Waterproofing: 2-3 days
  • Tile work (shower, floor, accents): 7-12 days
  • Vanity, fixtures, glass enclosure: 3-5 days
  • Paint, trim, final details: 3-5 days

Custom glass shower enclosures are typically measured after tile is complete and take 1-2 weeks to fabricate. Plan for that lead time.

Week-by-Week Breakdown of a Standard Remodel

Here's what a typical 5-week bathroom remodel looks like in practice for a Vancouver WA or Portland OR home.

Week 1 — Demo and Rough-In

Everything comes out. Toilet, vanity, tub or shower, flooring, drywall (where needed). The space gets stripped to studs and subfloor where necessary. This is where we find out what's behind the walls — more on that below.

Once demo is complete, rough-in plumbing and electrical begin. New supply lines, drain relocations, electrical for ventilation fans, lighting, and outlets get roughed in.

Week 2 — Plumbing, Electrical, and Inspections

Rough-in work wraps up and we schedule inspections. In Clark County, inspection turnaround is typically 1-3 business days. City of Portland can vary. We schedule these as early as possible to minimize dead time.

Once inspections pass, backer board goes up on walls where tile will be installed. Subfloor gets prepped or replaced if needed.

Week 3 — Waterproofing and Tile

Waterproofing membranes go on all wet areas — shower walls, shower pan, tub surround. This needs to cure properly before tile goes on top. In our PNW climate, proper waterproofing is non-negotiable.

Tile work starts once waterproofing is cured. Floor tile, shower tile, accent walls. This is the longest single phase — 5-7 days for a standard bathroom. Grout needs to cure before anything goes on top of it.

Week 4 — Fixtures, Vanity, and Finishing

The bathroom starts looking like a bathroom again. Vanity gets installed with plumbing connections. Toilet goes in. Shower fixtures, towel bars, toilet paper holder, mirrors — all the finish work.

Light fixtures and exhaust fan get their final connections. Outlets and switches get cover plates.

Week 5 — Paint, Trim, and Final Walkthrough

Walls and ceiling get painted. Trim and baseboards go in. Caulking around tub, shower, vanity, and toilet. Final cleanup.

We do a walkthrough with you to check every detail — grout lines, caulk joints, fixture operation, door and drawer function. If anything needs attention, we handle it before we call it done.

What Causes Delays (and How to Avoid Them)

Custom Materials on Backorder

This is the most common delay we see. A homeowner picks a specific tile, vanity, or fixture that has a 4-8 week lead time. Now your project sits waiting for one item.

How to avoid it: Finalize and order all materials before demo day. If something has a long lead time, either choose an alternative that's in stock or wait to start until everything is on-site.

Hidden Damage Behind Walls

Once demo starts, we sometimes find water damage, mold, or rot behind walls and under subfloors. Older homes in Vancouver and Portland are especially prone to this — decades of moisture in a bathroom take a toll.

How to avoid it: You can't fully prevent this, but you can plan for it. Budget an extra 5-10% as a contingency. A good contractor will document what they find and discuss options before proceeding.

Permit and Inspection Scheduling

Clark County and City of Portland both require inspections for plumbing and electrical rough-in. Inspection wait times vary — sometimes next day, sometimes 3-5 business days. This is outside anyone's control.

How to avoid it: Work with a contractor who schedules inspections proactively and plans the workflow around inspection windows. We schedule inspections as soon as rough-in is complete to minimize downtime.

PNW Weather and Ventilation

Rain and humidity affect cure times for waterproofing, grout, and paint. A bathroom remodel in January may take a few extra days compared to July simply because materials take longer to cure in cold, damp conditions.

How to avoid it: Plan for slightly longer timelines in the wet season (October-March). Good ventilation during the project helps — we use temporary fans and dehumidifiers when needed.

How to Keep Your Remodel on Schedule

  • Finalize all materials before demo day. Every tile, fixture, vanity, mirror, and hardware selection should be made and ordered (or confirmed in stock) before work begins. This single step prevents more delays than anything else.
  • Hire one crew that handles all trades. When you have separate contractors for plumbing, electrical, tile, and paint, scheduling conflicts multiply. One team that manages everything keeps the project moving. Same standard on every job, one point of contact throughout.
  • Don't change scope mid-project. Deciding to add heated floors after tile is already going down means ripping it up and starting over. Make all decisions upfront. Changes mid-project are the fastest way to blow both your timeline and your budget.
  • Plan for one bathroom to be offline. If you have a second bathroom, use it. If you don't, talk to your contractor about a phased approach before work starts. Knowing the plan reduces stress.

Pro tip: Create a shared materials list with your contractor. Include model numbers, quantities, and delivery dates. When everyone is working from the same list, surprises disappear.

Can You Use Your Bathroom During a Remodel?

Short answer: no. Once demo starts, the bathroom is a construction zone. No toilet, no sink, no shower. Plan to use another bathroom in your home for the full duration of the project.

If you only have one bathroom, this needs to be discussed before work begins. A phased approach is possible — for example, keeping the toilet functional for a portion of the project — but it adds complexity and time. We've done single-bathroom remodels before and can work through the logistics with you.
